Description

This charming mid-century pictorial map of Glacier National Park was published in 1950 by the Great Northern Railway to promote passenger traffic along its lines through ‘America’s Mountain Vacation Land’. An abstract aerial view of the park, oriented with northwest at the top, emphasizes the rugged terrain, local attractions, and transportation options with a number of illustrated vignettes. Seven different options for accommodations are also drawn and labeled, including the Glacier Park Hotel, Prince of Wales Hotel, and Sperry Chalet (where mountain goats are your neighbors).

The park is half of the Glacier-Waterton International Peace Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Canadian portion is relegated to the background – presumably because it wasn’t serviced by the lines of the Great Northern! An inset map in the lower right and on the verso, along with text and photographs, provides further encouragement to see the West along the lines of the Great Northern Railway.
