Description

This interesting mid-century pocket map of the southeastern United States outlines the operations of three closely associated railroads: the Atlanta and West Point Rail Road Company, the Western Railway of Alabama, and the Georgia Railroad. Together, their lines connect Augusta, Georgia, with Selma, Alabama, through Atlanta, with numerous branches and connections serving regional hubs like Athens, Macon, and Tuskegee. Though legally independent, the three railroads operated in close cooperation and were historically presented together as the West Point Route.

The rest of the image is filled with criss-crossing lines that capture the complexity of America’s rail network in the postwar era, when consolidation was beginning to reshape the industry. Steam routes, including those completed and under construction, as well as electric routes, are identified according to the legend at center right. Published by Baker, Jones, Hausauer Inc. of Buffalo, New York, the map was revised to show updates to July 1952.
