A pair of maps highlighting England’s interior development during the end of the Industrial Revolution.

This interesting pair of engraved maps details the growth of the relatively centralized network of railways and canals across England between the second and fourth decades of the 19th century. The first, published around 1818 by Londman, Hurst, Rees, Orne & Brown, shows little detail otherwise.

Only a handful of short rail lines, primarily serving industrial purposes, are shown. Canals are more plentiful. The image does make clear the paucity of such infrastructure across Scotland.

The second map was published around 1844 by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge. It’s limited to Britain only, but shows considerably more hydrological information, county outlines, and additional place names. Canal construction is clearly outpaced by the railways.
