Description
This detailed antique map of Maine was published in an atlas by the firm of Samuel Augustus Mitchell, Jr. in 1880. A decorative ivy border encloses a hand colored overview of The Pine Tree State during a period of significant growth and industrialization, though the northern regions remain quite remote.
Railroads are shown with thick black lines, facilitating the movement of people and commodities to and along the coast. Relief is shown in hachure and a variety of geographic features are labeled, along with settlements, forts, mills, trading posts, and more. An inset of Portland Harbor and vicinity can be seen in the lower right.
