Description
This fascinating nautical chart of Matagorda Bay, Texas was published in 1872 by the United States Coastal Survey under the leadership of A.D. Bache and Benjamin Pierce. Scores of depth sounds are provided (in feet), along with information on tidal patterns, navigational aids (buoys, lighthouses, etc.), and coastal hazards. Of notable interest is the ‘ghost’ town of Indianola, destroyed by hurricanes in 1875 and 1886 before being abandoned.
