Description
This relatively straightforward road map was published around 1927 by the Clason Map Company of Denver & Chicago (based on the information presented in the key). The sheet, showing an area between Pittsburgh and Milwaukee, was part of a larger work covering the entire United States. In 1926, federal legislation established a national network of numbered highways, providing a more coherent method for the rapidly growing number of motorists. These highways are shown in small shields (recognizable symbols today) throughout the image. Road surfaces (paved, gravel, and other) are noted by the style of line, and distances between points are provided, in many cases.
