Description
This large scale city plan of New Haven and the surrounding suburbs was drawn and published in 1877 by James Bogart and Horace Andrews. The chromolithographic processes used to create the map, relatively new in the 1870’s, were performed by the firm of Julius Bien & Co.
The map shows the area in tremendous detail; individually labeling prominent buildings, transportation routes, geographic features, and local industries. An accompanying index identifies over 125 additional locations numbered within the image (Yale College is #65).
Using information obtained from earlier publications created by the U.S. Coast Survey, Bogart & Andrews were able to include data on depth soundings, tidal changes, and navigation buoys. Maps from the city engineering department provided the information for the terrestrial content, where topography is depicted in simple hachure and low-lying swampland is shown pictorially. A small scale map of map of the region, also created by James Bogart, is also pasted to the inside of the front cover.

Condition Description: The map folds into 30 panels and is affixed to its original boards, which are covered in green cloth and embossed with gilt lettering. There is moderate wear and discoloration along the fold lines, plus several areas with damp staining within the image and, most evidently, in the margins. Several tears where the map is affixed to the boards have been professionally repaired and restored, but there is discoloration in the area as a result. Despite the several visual defects, they are mostly minor and the map remains in strong shape and is an excellent example of early lithographic color.
