Description
This neat little route map of the southeastern United States shows the lines of the Central of Georgia Railway running from Chattanooga and Birmingham across a heavily distorted Georgia to the coast at Savannah (about 1,750 miles in total). Connections extend to Chicago, Kansas City, New Orleans, New York, and Miami (via an inset in the lower right). The front cover offers a fun visualization of the railroad’s primary routes, offering ‘a Hand Full of Strong Freight Lines.’
The centerfold map, created by the Poole Brothers of Chicago, was issued in a Central of Georgia informational brochure for the Winter of 1960/61. It offers a station index, passenger and freight department directory, timetables, and more. Though not mentioned in the contents, segregated facilities and equipment were still in use at the time of issue. The Central of Georgia railroad resisted the integration mandate by the Interstate Commerce Commission and retained the use of partitioned cars on its routes within Georgia.
