Description

This quaint pictorial map was designed by Kenneth E. Morang and published by the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce in 1934. Text in the upper right assures the audience “this is a new kind of map on which trunk highways have been minimized and scenic drives featured in order to indicate the beauties so often missed by our visitors who “drive right through” – one can imagine that local businesses on such routes, struggling during the Great Depression, were pleased to be thus represented.

The image presents an attractive overview of the island. Locations of interest, recreational activities, geographic features, and numerous small towns are labeled throughout while scattered vignettes reflect a keen sense of humor and appreciation for Cape Cod’s history. Scenic tours are listed on either side of the map, which was designed to be folded and mailed. This particular example was sent to Ralph Nelson in Medford, Massachusetts.
