Description
This vintage convertible level, Model No. 5, was probably created in the late 1930s/early 1940s by the Atlanta-based Bostrom-Brady Manufacturing Company. The durable brass instrument combined the functions of a transit and a leveling instrument, allowing users to establish horizontal and vertical planes, measure elevations, determine grades and slopes, and lay out straight lines over considerable distances. Such apparatuses were indispensable in the construction of roads, railroads, buildings, drainage systems, and agricultural improvements during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Condition Description: Brass, glass and steel convertible level with an eye-piece measuring about 10" long. Includes original box with dovetailed joints and leather strap, sadly broken. Box's contents include the directional guide (worn and bug-eaten), a base plate, plumb line, and a few other accessories. The level has some tarnishing, pitting, and wear, but appears to function appropriately (albeit without any legs or stand).
