Description

This illustrated map of Boston, Massachusetts was designed to show the breadth of the city’s 300-year history, beginning with the arrival of a Mr. Blackstone in 1630. Familiar points of interest such as Old Ironsides, the Boston Tea Party and the Custom House Tower appear alongside less recognizable memorials, such as a cage for Sabbath-breakers and the Drunkard’s Cloak. Significant amounts of text appear alongside these illustrations to provide the reader with further context and background on Boston’s history. The physical growth of the city can be tracked through the various water lines depicted outside the borders of the original city, shaded in green.

The verso of the sheet shows a similarly designed map in which William Dawes and Samuel Prescott get their just dues alongside the more famous Paul Revere. The image details the events of that fateful April night using an appealing variety of vignettes, small figures of the riders, and interesting annotations. Revolutionary-era quotes, profiles of the riders, and building views at the bottom of the sheet enhance the visual appeal of the map and provide additional historical context.

Drawn by Ivan Chisholm of Braintree and published around 1971 by Rawding Distributing Company of Winchester. The map was originally published around 1930 to celebrate the city’s tri-centennial.
