Description

Showcasing the vast waters of Boston Harbor from Deer Island to Cape Cod Bay and beyond, this attractive bird’s eye view numbers thirty-five different locations of interest across the region (labeled on the front cover). The City on A Hill occupies the foreground, with the distinct communities of South Boston and East Boston individually labeled. Numerous islands are depicted, but only a few are being shown as served by the local steamboat routes, which stretch into the background leading “To Provincetown” and, more impressively, “To Europe.”

The charming illustrated style of the buildings, ships, and topography add tremendously to this view, which was copywritten in 1905 by the Federal Engraving and Publishing Company of Boston. Published by John F. Murphy. One of several similar souvenir maps designed for the tourist industry in the first quarter of the 20th century.
