Description
This striking Italian topographic map presents a detailed overview of a large portion of the Karakoram mountain range that runs along the border between Pakistan, India, and China. Various geographic features are labeled, including the Baltoro Glacier and K2, the second-highest peak in the world (though named after its British survey annotation, not its ranking).
The image highlights a 1909 expedition to ascend K2 (the second made by Europeans), led by Prince Luigi Amedeo, Duke of the Abruzzi. The route of the arduous journey, which reached an elevation of about 20,500′, is highlighted in red. Encampments and altitude readings are also noted.
