Description
This detailed plan of the Mississippi River in Louisiana was published in 1943 by the Army Map Service, revised from an earlier edition of 1939. The colorful image outlines the extensive efforts of the Army Corps of Engineers for regional flood control management following the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927.
Dozens of miles of levees (existing and contemplated) stretch out across both banks of the Mississippi and several tributaries, including the Yazoo, Ouachita, and Red Rivers. Overflow and backwater areas from 1937 (another terrible flood year) are shaded in blue.
A fascinating variety of elements are labeled throughout, including geographic features, manmade infrastructure, settlements, transportation details, and more. Considering the strategic importance of the Mississippi’s maritime traffic, it’s unsurprising that the WWII-era map was marked RESTRICTED Not for Public Release below the title.
