This vibrant, richly saturated pictorial map is a remarkable artifact of World War II military morale and cross-cultural propaganda. Originally folded as a standalone mailer, this specific example carries a poignant piece of provenance: it was posted directly from the Canal Zone in November 1945 by an American service member to Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Maul of Hanover, Pennsylvania.

While the text on the verso strikes a fierce chord of wartime nationalism, boldly declaring that “V-J Day will come sooner because the United States completed the Panama Canal”, the map on the front tells an entirely different story. Rather than celebrating American industrial hegemony or engineering triumphs, the composition minimizes the canal itself, focusing instead on a sweeping, romanticized history of the Panamanian crossroads.

Beautifully illustrated by artist Ting Leong, the map utilizes bold, eye-catching colors to depict the historic galleons of Columbus and Balboa, Spanish colonial gold mines, and the territories of various indigenous tribes. By centering native pride and pre-colonial legacy over modern military infrastructure, the map functions as a fascinating exercise in soft-diplomacy, designed to educate incoming GIs while providing them with a stunning keepsake to send home.
