A New Map of Part of the United States of North America, containing those of New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusets, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland and Virginia

This large and handsome map of the northeastern United States is a masterful example of the “English School” of cartography, published in London by John Cary in 1806. Reflecting the transition from 18th-century decorative flourish to 19th-century scientific precision, the engraving is remarkably clean, eschewing elaborate cartouches in favor of crisp, legible data. The coverage extends from the southern border of Virginia through the New England states and into parts of Lower Canada, capturing a young nation in the midst of rapid post-Revolutionary consolidation.

Notable geographical details include the fledgling state of Vermont, an intricate network of early post roads, and the primary river arteries- the Hudson, Delaware, and Potomac – that fueled internal commerce. While the coastal regions are densely populated with towns and villages, the detail thins out west of the Appalachians, representing the contemporary limits of formal surveying in the “Western Territory.”
