Description

This wonderful cartographic celebration of Maine’s history was drawn and published in West Southport by Ruth Rhoads Lepper in 1958. It is the second edition (the first was issued c. 1952) and was printed by The J.S. McCarthy Company in Augusta.

The image shows a particular emphasis on the historic architecture and shipbuilding culture of Maine’s coastal communities. Dozens of vignettes exemplifying both categories are scattered across the page, with the lower right containing numerous labeled and dated illustrations of vessels constructed in the state’s shipyards.

Wildlife, local landmarks, and recreational activities are also well-represented. Panels on either side show additional views, as well as Maine’s seal and ‘A Memorial to All Maine Fishermen Who Have Devoted Their Lives to the Sea.’
