Description
This gorgeous and cleverly designed map vividly depicts the geography and much of the action from Mark Twain’s beloved American classic, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Tom and Jim (the N-word fortunately omitted) are shown carousing down the Mississippi, with numerous vignettes highlighting memorable scenes such as the Shakespeare rehearsal, a steamboat collision, lessons from Widow Douglas, and the ultimate arrival of Aunt Polly. The base image provides a simple reference map of the Mississippi River from Hannibal to Pikesville, with a small large-scale inset adjacent to the title cartouche.
Illustrated by Everett Henry and published in Cleveland in 1959 by the Harris-Intertype Corporation. According to the Osher Map Library;
Harris-Intertype Corporation of Cleveland, Ohio, published a dozen pictorial maps for their calendars in the 1950s and early 1960s to advertise the firm’s high quality color printing presses. Commercial artist Edward Everett Henry designed several “portrait maps,” all showing scenes from classic American and British novels. He mastered the difficult challenge of combining map and image.”
