Map of Rocky Mountains National Park

A detailed topographic map of Canada’s first National Park.

This large and eye-catching map presents an informative overview of Canada’s Rocky Mountains Park, established in 1885 as Banff Hot Springs Reserve and the first national park in Canada (the third in North America, after Yellowstone and Mackinac). Tourist spots of interest include Banff Springs Hotel, Lake Louise, government baths, and the Alpine Club.

Dozens of geographic features are labeled throughout the carefully crafted image, including mountain ranges and peaks, lakes, rivers, and passes. A handful of post offices, telegraph stations, and wardens’ offices (with and without telephones) represent the communication system, which was rapidly being developed alongside the local transportation network. Notably, the recently completed Banff–Windermere Highway is shown running to the south, ending near the small key map inset.

The map was compiled, drawn, and printed by the Topographic Survey of Canada (part of the Department of the Interior) in Ottawa in 1923. In 1930, Rocky Mountains Park would be officially renamed Banff National Park.
