Description

This rare map of Vienna, Austria was prepared by the Geographical Section of the British General Staff in July of 1944 to aid in the Allied preparations for the postwar occupation of the city. German-controlled Vienna had fallen to a Soviet offensive in April, precipitating a proclamation of independence that re-established the sovereign country. Both the nation and its capital would be partitioned between the four victorious powers until the Austrian State Treaty on July 27, 1955.

The image, marked SECRET in the upper right, shows a simple gray base map of the city with different shades noting structural outlines and outdoor areas. Red and blue coloring have been applied to reflect various levels of infrastructure, neighborhood composition, and important buildings. An inset in the lower left shows the density of population by districts – all critical consideration to the occupation powers.

As of April 2024, WorldCat notes only one example of the map – an earlier edition dated 1943 and located at the British Library. OCLC #497490373
