Description
This fascinating letterpress map highlights eight operational routes of the Bay Rapid Transit (BRT) across California’s Monterey Peninsula. They are numbered throughout the image and listed below the legend, concluding with the Monterey Peninsula Sightseeing Tour – 17 Mile Drive (#10). This world-famous scenic route can be traced through Pebble Beach, Del Monte Forest, and past Spanish Bay. Other features of interest include an inset of the BRT Terminal, a decorative compass rose, the Monterey Airport, the Carmel Mission, and the Del Monte Lodge.
Likely originally created around 1952, based on the BRT Routes depicted and the presence of the Navy School (est. in 1951). During this time, Ord Village (upper corner) saw a massive spike in activity due to the Korean War.
