Description

This detailed large-scale map presents a significant portion of the city of Yonkers between Park Avenue and the Hudson River. Landfill along the river is steadily adding new ground, to which are added proposed streets and further development. Individual buildings are outlined and colored according to their building composition.

Landowners’ names are provided in many cases, along with various measurements, roadways, and other important data points. Notable locations of interest include the Palisade Boat Club (still in operation), the Otis Elevator Works, Glenview Mansion (on the property of John P. Trevor), the Croton Aqueduct, and a sprawling estate owned by James Colgate.

The map was created for use in the commercial real estate industry, especially for companies that issued fire insurance. Designed by Joseph R. Bien and published by Julius Bien & Co. in New York in 1893 as part of Atlas of Westchester County, New York.
