Description

The first Renaissance Pleasure Faire of Southern California took place in the Santa Monica Mountains of Los Angeles County in 1963. Organized by Ron and Phyllis Patterson, an art director and high school English teacher, the event began as a re-enactment of a late 16th-century British market fair and is still in operation today.

This map of the fairgrounds can be found on the back page of the Spring 1975 issue of the production company’s official newsletter. The illustrated view identifies a number of different shops, amusements, and guest amenities according to a legend in the lower center. Of particular interest is Gypsie Caravansarie and Wolfsbane Lane, home to many of the occult booths and witches’ hut. An elaborate border comprised of coats of arms and decorative sun (God Save the Queen) complete the merry image.
