Description

This fascinating collection of material once belonged to Mrs. Jeanne Mizener, an American Red Cross nurse who volunteered for service in the Pacific during World War II. Two photographs offer a striking portrait of Jeanne in her A.R.C. uniform, in addition to a more lighthearted snapshot aboard the U.S.A.T. St. Olaf (indicating it was likely taken in 1946, after the ship was re-commissioned). The maps offer a fascinating window into her wartime experience, from training in Hawaii to occupation duty in Japan and numerous adventures in between.

Territory of Hawaii – U.S.A: Charming pictorial map of Hawaii by Ruth Taylor White, with a ‘native introduction’ printed on the verso.

Island of Hawaii – Vibrant pictorial map of the ‘Big Island’ by Ruth Taylor White. Pencil notes on verso.

Island of Hawaii – Simple transportation map of Hawaii issued by the local U.S.O.; The ABC Weekly – 2/14/1944 Newsletter (does not appear related to Australian Broadcasting Corporation) in both Japanese and English that reports on current events in Burma from a Japanese perspective.

[Transportation Map of Tokyo] – First edition guide map to the Tokyo Metropolitan area, issued by the Eighth U.S. Army Printing Plant. Railway diagram on verso.

Points of Interest in Central Tokyo – Two copies of a large-scale tourist map, each with a complimentary set of attractions circled (indicating Jeanne likely visited each site across two trips);

City Plan of Tokyo – Large and detailed map of the Tokyo metropolis dated August 1945, before the peace had even been officially signed;

[Transportation Map of Tokyo Area] – Enlarged version of the other example that shows local transportation options. Blank on verso.

The Sketch of Nagano City – Small sightseeing map with a regional transportation plan on the verso.
