Description
This ‘revolutionary’ map projection was designed by the German historian Arno Peters and published here by the Friendship Press (New York) in 1984. The equal-area projection ‘provides a helpful corrective to the distortions of traditional maps’, according to the descriptive text on the right side.
While this is probably true, Peter’s map is not the first to show the world in proportion to its relative size. James Gall (1808-1895), a Scottish clergyman and cartographer, published a paper nearly a century earlier about a similar global display, and today the two men’s works have been combined by many into the Gall–Peters projection.
