Description
This fascinating 20th-century printer’s block was used to create a promotional map of Winnebago County, Wisconsin. Towns, post offices, transportation routes, and geographic features are labeled (in negative) throughout, offering a simple overview of the verdant region, popular among outdoor enthusiasts.
The map is dated 1919 and signed Torreyson in the lower corner. This probably refers to Louis Henry Torreyson (1877-1972), a native of Oshkosh (the county seat) and the eventual editor of the Oshkosh Daily Northwestern. In 1919, Torreyson took an automobile tour across the county and the map was probably a result of his trip. A rubberstamp on the verso of the block indicates it was previously owned by the Oshkosh Chamber of Commerce.
