Description
The mysteries of Stonehenge have fascinated those who have seen it dating back as far as the 16th century, and even plays a small role in Arthurian Legend from much earlier. This print shows the prehistoric monument as of 1722, and was engraved by Johann Kip for inclusion in Bishop Gibson’s re-issue of Camden’s Britannia.
Small figures in the center emphasize the vast size of the stones, while accompanying text provides statistics and some speculation on their source. A certain Mr. Inigo Jones affirms they are entirely natural!
