Description

This wonderfully detailed map of Wilmette shows the Chicago North Shore suburb after about two decades of tremendous growth was (temporarily) halted by the Great Depression. Emphasis is clearly on local real estate, with numerous additions and subdivisions labeled, especially in the western region that formerly made up the village of Gross Point.

Local amenities like schools and parks, important sources of outdoor recreation, are outlined – most notably an early conceptual plan of Washington (Gillson) Park adjacent to Lake Michigan. Transportation routes include the Chicago and Northwestern Railway (today’s Metra line) and the Chicago North Shore & Milwaukee Railroad (an electric interurban).

The Ouilmette Country Club, Northwestern ‘El’ Terminal, North Shore Channel, and North Shore Golf Club are also labeled. The latter hosted the U.S. Open for the first time around the time of publication.

Drawn by surveyor Charles N. Robers and published around 1935. Distributed by R.M. Johnston & Company, a local real estate firm.
