This is a valiant attempt to distill the natural beauty and recreational diversity of the White Mountains into a pictorial image. Topographic detail is delicately illustrated and vignettes of the landscape and wildlife present an idyllic look. An image of the famous “Old Man of the Mountains” is perhaps the most striking natural feature.
Depicted alongside the environment are glimpses of a few of the leisure activities available in the area, including skiing, swimming, hiking and camping. Visitors can also take the Cannon Mountain Aerial Passenger Tramway, the first of its kind in the United States. Encouraging ridership was one of the goals of the distributor of this map, the New Hampshire Aerial Tramway Commission. An inset in the lower left shows just how close the White Mountain National Forest is to major cities on the East Coast, while text explains the theme of the map perfectly: “In the National Forests, conservation of natural resources and recreation are combined for maximum public benefit.”
