While You Are in Florida See These Outstanding Attractions

Persuasive map of Florida encouraging tourists to hit the road.

The absence of a scale on this map of Florida’s peninsula does much to belie the true size of the state. AAA instead nominated to provide mileage between various points on the highway – a clever method of encouraging frequent stops at member hotels and restaurants along the way. Illustrations of major attractions comprise the border of the sheet, while labels on the map identify their specific location, with the exception of golf courses and beaches. Presumably, these can be found everywhere! It’s interesting to consider what attractions would be chosen if the map were published today.

The image is signed N.M.R. in small letters, barely visible in the lower right border. Published around 1942 by the American Automobile Association, based on the car’s license plate (that year) on the front cover. Numerous advertisements, a highway map of Florida, a brief state history, and a list of recommended accommodations are provided on the verso.
