Description

“Even in the poorest districts of London and other big British cities there is no antagonism between the public and the police, and the latter are noted for their kindly help to children and others in trouble or poverty.” – Text, lower right.

This informational print was probably originally published in a large children’s encyclopedia published in the United Kingdom during the early 20th century. It presents profile illustrations of over 50 different police uniforms worn by (mostly white) officers and constables stationed across the world, though in reality the group is confined to “all civilized countries, or at least those under European control”, according to text along the bottom of the page.

Clear emphasis is given to the territories of the British Empire, including Sikh constables and Calcutta traffic police, complete with equipped umbrella!
