Description

This illustrated bird’s eye view shows the special Olympic Park constructed in northern Munich to accommodate various events for the 1972 Summer Olympic Games. The Olympia-Stadion dominates the grounds, and remains an iconic city landmark to this day. The right side does not show map details, rather it is a list of products offered by German pharmaceutical company Byk Gulden (sponsor of the print).

The 1972 Summer Olympics were held in Munich, West Germany and the event’s motto, the cheerful Games, was emblematic of the optimism and democratic enthusiasm of the host country. Unfortunately it was marred by a terrorist attack on Israeli athletes during the second week, costing the lives of eleven competitors and coaches and one German police officer.
