Western Battlefront (Corrected to Aug. 14, 1918)

Informing an American audience during the Hundred Days Offensive.

The compelling topographic view is bisected into squares with sides measuring 20 miles, allowing for a convenient distance reference. Railways connect dozens of towns and hamlets, labeled using a variety of fonts that indicate several iterations. The German trenches after the Spring Offensive are noted with small white circles, while the furthest advance is shown with a solid white line. Though the solid dark line of the active battle front indicates its accuracy as of August 14, 1918, it does not yet appear to incorporate the Allied territorial gains around Arras from the Battle of Amiens (Aug 8-12). This successful attack resulted in some of the largest single-day gains of the war, with Eric Ludendorff coining the battle’s first day as ‘the black day of the German Army.’ It also kicked off the Hundred Days Offensive, the final push that led to Germany’s capitulation and the Armistice in November.

The view was illustrated by talented German-born Otto Kurth for Mid-Week Pictorial. Kurth emigrated to the United States in 1905 and worked in the New York Times Art Department from the outbreak of World War I until 1924. He specialized in drawing highly detailed, bird’s-eye perspective maps tracking defensive installations, transportation networks, and battle lines across Europe. His work translated the complexities of modern warfare into visually compelling panoramas that were both informative and accessible to a general readership. Published in 1918 by the New York Times Company. A note in the title block indicates it was re-issued in several editions of Mid-Week Pictorial up to early September, so it was most likely printed sometime in the fall.
