Description

This skillfully engraved world map was originally designed by Herman Berghaus in 1867, but has been updated to 1872. It was published in Gotha by Justus Perthes as part of Stieler’s Hand-Atlas, a well-known German geography reference book.

The primary image shows the ocean currents as they traverse the globe and the extent of ice pack in the polar extremities. Additional lines note the paths of telegraph cables and steamer routes, with the latter including the average travel time (13 days from Hamburg to New York). Insets in the lower corners show polar projections from both north and south, while a third inset in the center shows bands of ocean surface temperatures around the world.
