Description

“Alayeska in the Aboriginal Aleut language means mainland, or great land. The name is aptly chosen, for Alaska is a great land – a land full of extremes and superlatives.” [text box, upper right]

This lovely folding brochure celebrating the natural splendor of Alaska was published through a cooperative effort between the U.S. Bureau of Land Management and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game in 1968.

The central image shows a colorful contour map of Alaska, admitted as a state less than a decade prior to publication. Land ownership of various federal agencies is highlighted and key infrastructure like campsites, transportation routes, and airports are identified according to the legend in the upper right. The verso presents severally wonderfully illustrated panels that highlight outdoor activities and many of Alaska’s most iconic animals.
