Description
“EPCOT Center is inspired by Walt Disney’s vision of a community where people of the world explore challenges and share new ideas for tomorrow…in hopes that the Dreams of Today may become the Realities of Tomorrow.” – Text, lower right.
First conceived as a utopian city, Walt Disney’s EPCOT (Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow) Center opened to the public in 1982. The theme park (one of four at Walt Disney World) can perhaps best be summarized as a permanent World’s Fair- a fundamentally capitalist venture presenting an idyllic arena of multicultural cooperation.
This illustrated bird’s eye view, published by Walt Disney Productions, was sold as a souvenir in the park during its first season in 1982. The brightly colored image is dominated by the iconic geodesic sphere – Spaceship Earth – in the foreground. The World Showcase and various other rides and attractions, several of which have not yet opened (marked ‘Future’), also reflect the themes of internationalism and technical innovation.
