Sporting activities like hunting and fishing exploded after the conclusion of World War II, with G.I.’s returning home and looking for leisure opportunities in peace, rather than war. This map of Washington shows the veritable bounty of natural wildlife and outdoor activities that can be found in the state, like skiing on Mt. Rainier, fishing along the Walla Walla, and sailing in the Juan de Fuca Strait. Cities are shaded in red and parks in green, but the real focus is on the variety of animals comprising the majority of illustrations on the map and around the border.
