Description

First published in Cincinnati in 1938 by the firm of A.C. Wagner, this detailed map of Youngstown, Ohio shows the city and nearby townships of Austintown, Struthers, Campbell, and Lowellville. An inset map in the upper left also includes Girard, just north of the map’s image.

The interior of the map is cluttered with street names, block numbers, cemeteries and parks; while the negative space is filled with a street index and key. The latter outlines primary transportation routes (trolleys, buses, cars, railroads), schools, and the various types of boundaries shown.

This particular example of the map was customized for use within the Central Engineering Department at the Pennsylvania Railroad. It was dissected and mounted on linen for preservation and ease of storage. Manuscript color updates to individual railroad routes highlight track ownership up to the early 1950’s, and a custom legend added to the lower left identifies the five primary local operators.

Of particular interest is the Youngstown & Southern Railroad, which at the time of publication was operating as one of Ohio’s last electric interurban passenger railways.
