Description
This copperplate engraved view of the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa was issued by Jacques Nicholas Bellin for the first French edition of Abbè Prevost’s Histoire Générale des Voyages, published by Didot at Paris between 1746 and 1758.
The primary image on the bottom half of the sheet provides a bird’s eye view of the cape and identifies 11 points of interest dating back to the Dutch occupancy from the 17th century. The upper half of the sheet shows an outline of the Castle of Good Hope and a top down perspective of Table Bay, including Robben Island.

Condition Description: Very faint smudges and foxing confined largely to the margins, including two areas of ink concentration in the upper and lower left corners of the neatline. Ragged left and lower edges of the sheet and the plateline extends into the right margin. A bold imprint on a strong sheet.
