Description
This early 18th-century print shows a ‘View of the City of Glasgow from the North-East’, according to its title. A large church, probably the Glasgow Cathedral, occupies much of the right side while several other steeples can be seen dominating the skyline. Tightly packed buildings reflect the city’s medieval history.
The view was published in Leiden in 1707 by Peter Van der Aa as part of James Beeverel’s “Les Delices de la Grand Bretagne” [The Delights of Great Britain]. The same year as publication, the 1707 Acts of Union brought the separate legislatures of England and Scotland into one kingdom, that of Great Britain.
