Description

The First Fleet was a collection of cargo vessels, transport ships, and British Navy warships that traveled from Portsmouth, England to New South Wales, Australia, between May 13, 1797 and January 26, 1788. The harrowing journey was to deliver a load of convicts to a penal colony there, which also happened to be the first permanent European settlement in Australia.

This map was issued 100 years later by the Australia Post to commemorate the milestone event, and includes a basic map of the eastern Hemisphere with the route of the fleet highlighted in red. Accompanying text and illustrations provide historical detail, especially in the upper right, where a handful of the unfortunate prisoners are shown under redcoat guard, with an indigenous Aborigine standing above and looking on silently.

The map also includes 21 stamps which were also issued to commemorate the voyage, ranging between 37 cents and one dollar.
