Description

This stunning sign was published in the early 1900s to promote Ajmar, an Italian sparkling wine exported around the world (esportazione Mondiale). A gorgeous woman with flowing red hair is shown bursting through the center of the image, wearing a garland of flowers and elegantly holding a Champagne coup.

Vague continental outlines on the double-hemisphere map allude to the global expanse of the Ajmar market, with the distinctive pink hue of the British Empire stretching across most of southern Asia. Such vibrant imagery would have undoubtedly caught the eyes of passersby as the sign hung in wine retailers, restaurants, and cafes.

The advertisement was published in Como by Mandelli (signed, lower right). Probably printed around 1910 on behalf of L. Ajmar & Company of Nizza Monferrato, a small municipality located in the Asti Province of Italy.
