Description

Originally drawn by Saul Steinberg for the March 29, 1976, edition of The New Yorker, View of the World from 9th Avenue is a seminal work in both geographic perspective and the self-identity of ‘The Capital of the World.’ This version, published in poster form that same year, recreates the view from Manhattan, looking west.

After the eye crosses the Hudson River, any attempt at realism is replaced by a satirical representation of how New Yorkers view the rest of the U.S. and beyond. A bland green (except for New Jersey, a deliberately darker shade of brown) plain contains a few scattered ambiguous landmarks and place names, reflecting their relative unimportance to the 9th Avenue intersection in the foreground.

The recognizable view has been copied and parodied many times, including an instance by Columbia Pictures which resulted in a successful copyright lawsuit by Steinberg. After fleeing his homeland in 1941, the Jewish Romanian-American artist and writer became a prolific illustrator for the New Yorker, in addition to exhibiting in nearly 100 different art shows around the globe. It is perhaps appropriate that one of the most recognizable views of New York was created by a member of the city’s immigrant community.
