Description

This is a near contemporary view of Capt. Constantine John Phipp’s voyage toward the North Pole in 1773. His crew, including a young midshipmen by the name of Horatio Nelson, discovered Walden Island during the trip, but was forced to turn back because of heavy ice pack.

The image shows the crew hauling the ships’ boats into the open water. Both the HMS Racehorse and the HMS Carcass were originally mortar vessels with reinforced hulls, refitted for survey work for their trip to the Arctic.
