Description

This attractive steel engraved view was published in Percival Barlow’s A General History of Europe around 1790. It shows the Italian city of Florence from the River Arno, with gently rolling Tuscan hills and villas visible in the background. Fishermen can be seen in small boats working on the water with walled palaces, church steeples, and towers rising above the skyline.

Though the city had experienced some decline since its role as a center of learning and culture during the Italian Renaissance, it was still an important component of the Duchy of Tuscany (then under the control of Holy Roman Emperor Leopold II) until Napoleon conquered the peninsula in 1796.
