Description

Vanderbilt University, located in Nashville, Tennessee, was founded in 1873 using a gift from ‘Commodore’ Cornelius Vanderbilt (the only such donation he ever made) of $1 million. This detailed plan of the university grounds emphasizes just how much the institution had grown in the preceding 120 years. Nearly two dozen buildings are numbered and identified at the bottom of the page, though many more are named within the image. Parking areas, always a primary concern for visitors and students, are highlighted in red.

The base image was designed in 1989 by Jeannie Rice and re-published in 1993 for a class reunion.
