Description

This visceral wood engraving, based on a drawing by Julian Scott, was originally published in the Jan. 27, 1877 edition of Harper’s Weekly. It shows a handful of American troops encamped at Valley Forge through the winter of 1778/78.

Chosen as seasonal quarters for strategic reasons, this little community about 20 miles northwest of Philadelphia (then held by the British) became a by-word for the suffering and endurance of the Continental Army. Julian Scott (1846 – 1902) was a noted painter of military history.
