Description

This dazzling tourist map of New Mexico provides a sweeping pictorial overview of the ‘Land of Enchantment’ and its history, leisure, flora, and fauna. Numerous illustrated vignettes highlight iconic scenes from the Wild West, Native American and Spanish dancing, natural landmarks, recreational activities, and much more.

The idealized nuclear family can be seen in the lower right, observing the scenic view and literally taking the recommendation at the bottom – “This Year, See All of New Mexico.” Photographs, text, and a transportation map on the verso go to great lengths to break contemporary stereotypes about the state’s arid climate and remote accessibility.

Drawn by Webb Young and issued by the New Mexico Bureau of Tourism in 1954. Scarce, with only one listed copy in OCLC (University of New Mexico) and an additional example found at the New Mexico History Museum.
