The Pearl in Your Hand – Hong Kong during the 1950s.

This informative tourist brochure of Hong Kong and surrounding areas was copywritten by the British Crown Lands and Survey Office and published by the Hong Kong Tourist Association around 1956, based on the land reclamation around the airport and the status of suburban expansion.

Five different maps (1 small, 4 large-scale) are presented on both sides of the sheet: Kowloon Peninsula, Tsim Sha Tsui, Some Excursions in Hong Kong, Victoria, and Central District of Hong Kong Island. Each plan emphasizes locations of interest, transportation accessibility, and prominent geographic features.

A detailed snapshot (from the British perspective) that captures the explosive growth of Hong Kong following the end of World War II – largely at the expense of hundreds of thousands of refugees from the Chinese Civil War and resulting Maoist regime.
