Description

Home of the Highlanders, the University of California Riverside first opened in 1954 with 127 students and 65 professors, with the first provost noting “never have so few been taught by so many.” However, enrollment exceeded 1,000 by 1958, and today UC Riverside is consistently rated in the top 40 public universities in the nation.

The campus can be seen here in 1989, just a few years before significant expansion in the early 1990’s. University buildings are labeled in yellow and illustrated in profile, with the mascot shown marching down West Campus Drive. The eye is also drawn to the myriad of advertisements for local businesses concentrated in the lower half of the image. A billboard and several inset views promote those that were unfortunately outside the geographic scope of the map.
